The Question Has To Be Asked – What Is Happening To Our Children?

This is NOT the post I intended to write this evening, but after seeing this story hit the NBC Nightly News, I couldn’t sit by idly and leave without comment. The top story of the evening was a warning issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics related to the alarming rise of “cholesterol lowering medications to children as young as 8.” My jaw hit the floor.

“Are you kidding me, I said out loud?”

The questions in my mind started coming faster than I could keep track. I was just amazed at this report.

And while the story went on to say that medication is NOT the first line of defense, I wanted more. I wanted someone to take responsibility and ask the following questions:

  • What is happening to our children?
  • Why the sudden increase?
  • Who is RESPONSIBLE?

And because I don’t have these answers, I won’t go on about this too long.

But here are my thoughts:

  1. What is different about our society today than the generations before us?
  2. Is there some additive, preservative, or chemicals in our food that is responsible?
  3. What else is going on? Tell me (please) how this is happening!

Coming full circle – to all my readers and anyone else out there coming across this post… Stories like this simply reinforce why it is so important that we encourage:

  • Exercise
  • Healthy, balanced diet
  • Wellness
  • Prevention (instead of treatment)

Bottom line? Isn’t it time we took responsibility for what is going? Can we finally stop playing the BLAME game, and actually make a difference?

Can some one, some company, some organization stand up and focus on the impact whatever this “x-factor” is having upon our children?
