Success Happens In The Middle
By Rory Stern | January 5, 2009
Welcome back! Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below!
I often tell my clients “Things are going to get worse, before they get better.” I tell them that because I want them to be prepared… I want them to expect it! But most of it all, I want to reinforce that the information and strategies I am about to share will NOT get immediate results… Don’t get me wrong, the strategies will make a difference – but there absolutely will be a period of adjustment.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that this is a tired cliche. It’s a tired cliche that some people are really sick and tired of hearing. And I am willing to be that some people don’t even believe it any more.
Like it or not, the lesson is real. But today I want to take that lesson to the NEXT LEVEL!
A good friend and colleague of mine reminded me today that “…you can’t make a cake without making a mess in the kitchen.” It’s sort of like, “you can’t make an omelete without breaking a few eggs.” But WHAT does that really mean?
We got on this topic because we were reviewing our goals for 2009. So many people believe that you are only successful when you reach your goals. But — what if success actually came during your attempt to reach your goals?
What if success actually started to happen in the middle of working towards that change? Or working towards that new goal?
It makes sense right? Change starts to happen… But most of us are taught to look for the final outcome and result.
Here’s something else to consider: The space shuttle is constantly readjusting it’s course during its decent back to Earth. That’s the Space Shuttle! It is constantly failing as it returns to Earth. But all that failing, struggling, and change leads to success!
When President Kennedy announced that we were going to put a Man On The Moon, I bet there were a lot of people who thought he was crazy! But we did it!
If I haven’t said it recently, I don’t believe we can just focus on managing ADHD alone to reach our goals – whatever they may be. I am a firm believer that ADHD is a just a piece of who we are and what we have to offer this world. If you want to be amazing, be amazing… There’s no reason you can’t….
What Do You Think?

Change always involves moving to the middle where you can go either way. Then you can decide to take a step towards reaching a goal instead of falling back on your comfort level, the old way which hasn’t been working. It gives you a chance to change things up a bit and with practice, see where you stand on that new level. In a writer’s group, I learned to start in the middle, because that’s where the action is and movement keeps the reader turning the pages to see if his prediction matches up with the tone and point of view.
