    New Diagnostic Tool For ADHD

    By Rory Stern | September 18, 2008

Welcome back! Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Today I had the opportunity to preview a new diagnostic instrument that claims to be an objective measure of ADHD.  One of the big problems (for so many people) about ADHD is that you can’t really see it…  You can’t quite put your finger on it…

    About This Objective Measure

Of all the tools and methods to diagnose ADHD, most of them are incredibly subjective…

Despite all the research, these methods are more or less open to the interpretation of the examiner or clinician.

And while brain scans (SPEC) are being popularized, use beyond general research data is just NOT there yet.

This leads me to this new machine…  The research behind the process is rather extensive, and the resulting data are very compelling.

As of right now, I am excited about the possibilities of this new diagnostic tool.  I saw it in action, and understand the principles behind it.  But I won’t know exactly how it works until I see a report and get a feel for how the results are interpreted and applied.

    Showing Promise…

Of everything I saw today, I was most impressed by the company representatives who shared the following:

This tool does NOT determine – yes it’s ADHD or no it’s not.  Rather, the resulting report displays to what degree the hallmark symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness) of ADHD are present.

In other words…  This test does not claim to diagnose ADHD, but rather it shows what symptoms are present and to what degree.

At least that’s how I understand it.

    My Takeaway:

I am going to focus on the degree to which the symptoms appear!

Take Note:  I am NOT talking about how the symptoms interfere or cause problems.  We are just looking at what is present so we can find a way to effectively manage the symptoms.
