ADHD Success Tip: Enough With The Labels Already

I am so FED UP with the need to label every kid or adult who is different.  I just can’t take it anymore.  This morning I received an e-mail from a Mom, who was telling me about her “gifted” child who had been diagnosed with ADHD – even though he apparently did not meet the full criteria for diagnosis.

I guess it’s just NOT good enough to know someone is different…

  1. Another great post today Rory.

I have found labels to be self-fulfilling prophecies in action so always be careful what labels you allow to be put on yourself or your child.

  2. Preach it! Sometimes I think as parents that some how it makes us feel better when we have a “label” for a child who doesn’t fit the mold. I have 2 kids like that. Years ago I finally saw the light. I am so glad that I didn’t seriously pursue the label thing. For a short time I had my youngest son in a type of therapy. To this day he asks me what that was about and ya know… I have trouble explaining it.

Have you read “Soar With Your Strengths”? Your message made me think of that book.. focus on your strengths, manage your weaknesses.

  3. I agree. Well, let’s put it this way; the label “ADHD” gave me a lot of information, and that’s the advantage I see in labels. On the other hand- it seems like we need labels because we as a society think we should have a “normal” that we all fit into. So we have all these kids who need IEPs (and hence need a label to get an IEP) in order to get their needs met… because our system doesn’t serve individuals, it serves the “norm.” I think not so many of us fit into that norm, and I so agree with you Rory, that if we focused on what each individual needed, rather than how to put them in the normal shoebox, we wouldn’t need the labels to begin with.
