Last night we kicked off the inaugural ADHD Family Teleseminars by talking about ADHD Alternative Treatments. If not the most frequently requested topic, it is definitely amongst the top 2 or 3, especially by parents of children with ADHD.

No matter where you stand on the medication debate, considering alternative treatments is critical to successfully supporting someone with ADHD or to managing your own ADHD.

Why?

Last night I shared with my listeners that even when choosing to use medication, “alternatives” really are an integral part of successful treatment. You see, for me, ADHD alternative treatment involves anything we do or use that is non-medication based!

Some of what we talked about:

Neurofeedback / Biofeedback

Diet

Supplements

Strategies

Hypnotherapy

My readers asked a lot of really great questions, and I think the most common one of them all was:

What ADHD alterantive treatments actually work?

This is a great question, and we answered it last night. There is no one alternative treatment for ADHD that works better than the next.

ADHD is a complex diagnosis that is never one size fits all. It is different in everyone it touches, and that’s why next week we’ll be covering the topic: ADHD Co-existing Conditions & Complications.

Last night I heard an incredible presentation on LENS Neurofeedback, from my new colleague Rebecca Shafir. Often being asked about alternative (non-medication) methods of treatment for ADHD, I was incredibly delighted to hear about this process.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a process or therapy technique that measures realtime brain activity that is measured through sensors on the scalp. As it was described to me, this treatment protocol “gets the brain to be more flexible.

LENS Neurofeedback, or Low Energ Neurofeedback System, differs a little bui in that it relies on an electromagnetic field rather than electric current. I also understand that instead of taking upwards of 50 sessions, LENS can be completed within approximately 15 sessions.

Now I understand that this is an incredibly simplistic overview, which raises many questions… And that’s why I’ve invited Rebecca to do an interview on this very topic. Of all the questions I am asked the most, parents are always looking to learn more about alternative, non-medication approaches to treating ADHD.

Although I still have a lot to learn about Neurofeedback, what I love the most is that it does not claim, misrepresent, or provide false hope of “curing ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.”

In fact, Rebecca began the presentation by saying, “Neurofeedback is NOT a cure. Instead, enables a person to implement strategies to accomplish tasks in life.”

Strategies…

Did you hear that part?

You know I ate that right up. Strategies are everything. Regardless of whether a person takes medication for ADHD, or chooses not to, strategies are everything!

Bottom Line?

What I loved the most about this presentation was learning that Neurofeedback is more about working on symptoms or behaviors and NOT a diagnosis like ADHD.
