i'm a 5o year old male, diagnosed with A.D.H.D. didn't know what was wrong with me for about 45 of those years. how do i make it through life i stay away from white sugar unless i go to a party then i have about three or four coffees, tea, milo, choclate it doesn't matter. what matters is the three heaped teaspoons of white sugar thats the kicker as long as that sugar is maintained on a 5 to 6 hourly intake i won't sleep, two and a half days later i stopped taking white sugar and started taking raw sugar so i cauld go to sleep. as for money if i don't have the cash then i can't have it. deep breathing exercising helps me big time when confronted with a frustrating event, eg... angry wife, road rage,... get the drift in through the nose out through the mouth haha i was told i should write a book at the age of 21 and heaps of times since, i have had a very extraordinary life if i had not been adhd well to be honest how would have my life turned out.....? thats real easy it would have been normal ...hahahah now where's the fun in that. hope what i had to say here helps seeyabye haha

regarding comments on what else as a reader and adult with ADD would like to know about:
- being on a limited budget on a Disability Pension, not working, how to access the right help for coaching/direction to get started with budgeting and making your money last for the important things each month, but yet not always having to say "oh i can't afford to go here or there or join in on something because i cant' afford it....." This is something i am starting to struggle with more and more. When you don't feel you have the money or should spend the money on something, it is very easy to isolate yourself and just stay home. It doesn't help your self-esteem to think you cannot afford to do something fun or different. It's already hard enough to ask for help, but when you need something done and you cannot afford to pay for help, it can be very depressing if you are not one to know how to stretch your dollars, live within your means. Also, when others want you to join them, go with them and you cannot pay your way or contribute to the expenses if you want to go.

Another topic on How to make extra money, if on a disability or even if at some point want to see if you can get a job and off disability, but not take just any job that is not the right environment for your ADD. Even if on disability and you want to make the minimum you are allowed but again don't want to take just any job that might make you regress in self-esteem and your dealing with ADD and other issues like depression etc. I need to do things that give me passion and purpose in life or i might as well just give up altogether.
Thanks Judie Witt

Dr. Stern....thank you so much for this opportunity to hear this interview with Dr. Stephanie Larkis.
Wow what an excellent interview in regards to how a person with ADD responds or reacts to their financial position to someone without ADD. It helps to realize for myself and to someone who doesnt' understand ADD what it is really like when you both gave examples ADD vs. not having ADD. Everything Dr. Larkis explained or elaborated on was so bang on about someone with ADD reacts or processes information.

By the time i was finished listening I had wrote over 4 pages of notes on everything both of you touched on in as many of the "table of contents' from her book that you could squeeze in the interview. i was amazed at how much info she has, how much insight and easy to understand explanations she gave for each topic.

I would love to see everything that gave me an "Ahaaa" moment about how a person with ADD looks at something as opposed to someone without.

The impulsivity, disorganization/clutter, communication & relationships relating to money or anything else (something i struggle immensely with also putting my thinking into words, it always seems to come out the way i didn't want it to...).

I see how it is so interconnected to other diagnosis, such as PTSD, depression etc.

Can't wait to get the book, i think it will be a book i will need always to have within arms length to continually refer to for myself and to explain to others how i process info, that my brain is wired differently.

Thanks this interview was inspiring, hopeful with great information and ideas!

Dr. Stern OMG this was such an EXCELLENT interview!!
Briefly i want to say (as i need to go eat and havent' and couldn't til i finished listenly cause as ususal my thoughts and revaltions for me were running thru my head so fast...!)Dr. Larkis book, comments, your questions and comments everything in this interview and what sounds like is in her book, is hitting every topic, title, discussion about ADD and how it influences every aspect of life, and in my comment here (AND FOR ME HER INTERVIEW HERE ABOUT WHAT IS IN HER BOOK TO HELP SOMEONE LIKE MYSELF)is so right bang on, for a lack of better words. Everything spoke to me about what ADD is and has been like for me thru out my whole life, and now i really get what it is happening to me and how all my past issues/events have led me up to now....my brief AHA moment or summation of interview/book is all about of this is info i just took in is.....(also i wrote and wrote over 4 pages of notes from the interview this morning that spoke ot me what life for me with ADD is like everyday!) that:
ADD feeds on each events/issues all your life - one thing leads to another - interacts w/each other - so interconnected with each other, that if not considered by a physician/counsellor etc. to be checked and/or assessed for ADD and then if diagnosed and not dealt with immediately or within a reasonable amount of time....it feeds on each other like this too (a "dominos effect" you could say!) to confusion, frustration, acting out, numbing out, reacting negatively, not living up to your potential (your passion/purpose in life), all of which (and i am sure there more that can be added to of what i just said here) interconnects, or leads up to ie. alcohol, promiscuity, drugs whatever the "drug of choice" to deal with the pain confusion of what is happening with you that you just don't understand to stop it from hurting and causing havoc in your life. It's like for me dysfunctional family unit, childhood sexual abuse, not doing well in school, low self-esteem confidence, bad judgement/decisions, negative impulsivity, to sadness, depression, PTSD, even suicide, for some people, can all happen if ADD is not considered of looked at in the whole dynamics of a person's life. My goodness it just shows how ALL of the above not just ADD how like i said is SO INTERCONNECTED....you cannot just blame it on ADD or anything else, everything in lifestyle and thinking and feeling needs to be looked at by any professional helping you and it starts with in childhood by the parents, but if they are not informed parents......it can get out of hand as the child grows up into adulthood!!
okay so this ended up not being brief, i did try, however, ce la vie, this is typical of me!!!LOL
note to Dr. Stern: can what i just typed here be saved somehow either here or a copy sent to me so i know and can keep what i just typed to you....it would help me with my understanding of myself and how ADD is affecting me...for my own reference?
Thanks for the opportunity to hear this interview!
P.S. i would really like know how this interview could be almost be condensed to give this info to others in a person's life, to help them understand what someone like me is going thru w/ADD ie. friend, family member, boss, physician/counseller any profesional...in order for them to understand why a person with ADD does or says what they do....do you know what i mean?? If not, Dr. Stern, or if you would need to talk to me about this via phone, email to get more info about what i am thinking on this, please let me know?!
thanks so so much for this interview Dr. Stern, it has been soooo eye opening and given so much awareness and understanding for me as a person thinking they have ADD and working on getting assessed and continuing to work and move forward with living with ADD. I look forward to finding the resources to obtain this book as a kind of coach for my awareness in my dealing with my own ADD now and in the future! Judie P.S. Since some of this info would be obtained from the U.S.A. what resources or direction on info can one find from Canada in the way of getting help with ADD (not quite sure what i am asking here, do you have an idea of what i am getting at or where i am going with this comment? Thanks again. Judie

I'm so excited about the new book about to come out on ADD and Your Money... After listening to the audio interview with Dr. Sarkis I feel like the book was written about me. I'm horrible with money and felt ashamed of my behavior and have been told that I'm being irresponsible. That comment has left me with a huge guilt and anxiety. Now I feel there is somebody out there that understands and to help to deal with this issue.

Hi Rory:

My sense of the ADHD and Money thing is that many of us with ADHD have a hard time with numbers in general--from arithmetic in grade to school to time to amounts of money to mileage. So we aren't good at budgeting, know what we have, how much it takes to pay bills, etc. It's all about dyscalculia--the number part of the brain just doesn't seem to function very well. On some level, some of us don't get anything that has to do with numbers and money is just one of those things.
